A Question about Fabulous, Fashionable Tablets

Do tablets really make a difference in art? I have yet to get one, but I have yet to find a decent place to buy one and the ones in my local computer store are mad, wicked expensive, not to mention my current laptop is a bit on the fritz and I'd have to buy my own stuff next time. Do they honestly affect the quality of the art? Seriously, before I actually go buy one. It seems everyone has one.
